The Connection Between Dry Scalp & Hair Loss...What to do about it!
Share
I used to experience a lot outbreaks due to eczema. In receiving medical treatments, two of the side effects were a very dry scalp and hair loss. To counteract this, I did a lot of research and learned that there was a connection between dry scalp and hair loss. The reason being that healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. To achieve optimal hair growth, it’s best to begin at the root.
A healthy scalp is supported through your diet, your hygiene, and a healthy styling routine.
Begin with a healthy, balanced diet. Your skin is the largest organ on your body and a reflection of your inner health. Include in your meals plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and healthy fats. Limit the amount of processed foods, hydrogenated oils, dairy, and white sugars and grains. Drink plenty of water and stay away from sodas and other sugary drinks.
If you’re eating well and still experiencing issues, visit a doctor or naturopath. There may be a hormonal imbalance, a specific vitamin or mineral deficiency that’s not being supported from your diet, or a medical condition that needs to be treated.
The next step is to look at your hygiene. How often are you cleansing your scalp? What types of products are you using? Frequency of hair washing varies from person to person depending on hair type so make sure you’re cleansing your scalp at least every 1-2 weeks.
This means if you have a hair style that doesn’t allow for washing as frequently, you’ll want to make sure you’re at least utilizing a method to remove the build up on your scalp in an effort to prevent dry scalp and hair loss. This can be done by applying an astringent such as witch hazel to a cotton ball and gently wiping your entire scalp to remove excess oils and dirt.
Also, when washing your hair, be careful not to use too harsh of a cleanser. A good shampoo will remove all product, dirt, and excess oils from you hair but will not completely strip your hair and scalp of all of it’s natural oils. A good rule of thumb is if your hair is literally squeaky clean when you’re done washing, your shampoo is too harsh!
Lastly, you want to make sure you’re using the best products in your hair. Your styling choices should help you to achieve the best looking hair style and support the the health of your hair and scalp.
